A new Music Director is on the way!

Dear Members of the St. Alban’s family,
I am delighted to announce that after a long and prayerful search, we have called our new Music Director. Joel Pierce will have the daunting task of following our gifted and loved Jim Strand when he retires in June 2019.
Joel is currently the director of a sixty-voice church choir near Tucson and is a busy and creative music-maker throughout the area. Soon after Easter he will be making his way east to join us in Maine. I have been in conversation with Joel for weeks; his references and academic and professional credentials have proved stellar; his visit to us for a whirlwind few days last month was impressive; and a visit with him in Arizona by St. Alban’s members revealed the quality of his musical work and the love his own parish holds for him. Although youthful, Joel’s experience is vast and deeply relevant to our hopes for our Enriching our Worship at St Alban’s!
Joel has told me that that he is greatly looking forward to working with, and getting to know, the staff and members of St. Alban’s! In addition to music, he has a love for the outdoors, fitness, sushi, and his German Shepherd, Jazz. His favorite hymn is Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, and he is an avid fan of the New England Patriots!

Joel’s musical training began with his grandmother when he was eleven years old. As his skills increased, he went on to study piano and organ at the University of Arizona.  He holds a bachelor of music degree in piano performance, and a master of music degree in organ performance with an emphasis in sacred music. All of his academic degrees were earned with high honors.
Joel leaves behind three music ministries in Arizona. He served as the organist, pianist, and director of music and handbells at Valley Presbyterian Church.  He was the organist, pianist, and co-director of the young adult choir at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish. Finally, he led the contemporary worship service at Risen Savior Lutheran Church.
Joel also served as the organist for the Green Valley Community Chorus and played piano regularly for musical theatre productions mounted by the Arizona Repertory Theatre at the University of Arizona. He has appeared as a harpsichordist and pianist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and for the past ten years has taught a vibrant and thriving piano studio in the Tucson area. All these gifts and experience he now brings to St. Alban’s.
I am grateful for the many who have helped in this search, as well as all the applicants who put themselves forward and imagined making music with us!
Blessings and thanks,

The Rev. Tim Boggs
Rector
